He looked round first,

And then reversed.

Le verbe play n'a qu'une syllabe, et le preterit played n'en a qu'une aussi

Habituellement, la terminaison -ed n'est qu'un son consonantique et non une nouvelle syllabe; la lettre E est silencieuse

Par exemple, smiled rime avec child, même si child n'a pas de E avant le D.
